This rich and creamy protein hot chocolate is so easy to make and packed with over 25 grams of protein! It’s the perfect beverage for chilly winter days.
I love making my healthy hot chocolate during the winter months, but lately I’ve been prioritizing protein so I wanted to try a version that had chocolate protein powder in it. Cue this protein hot chocolate recipe I’m sharing with you today!
Not only is this hot chocolate rich and creamy just like you’d expect, but it’s packed with over 25 grams of protein.
It’s become my go-to cozy drink when I want something warm and chocolatey that doesn’t leave me feeling sluggish. It’s perfect as a post-workout recovery drink or just a treat-yourself moment on a cold day. And if you’re as into sneaky protein boosts as I am, you’ve got to check out my protein coffee or protein milkshake next!
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- High-protein – This hot cocoa is loaded with over 25 grams of protein, so it’ll keep you full and satisfied for longer.
- Quick and easy – Ready in just 10 minutes, it’s the perfect winter treat for busy days or whenever you need a quick pick-me-up.
- Customizable – Use your favorite non-dairy milk, swap the sweetener, or top it with whipped cream, marshmallows, or even a sprinkle of cinnamon.
- Naturally sweetened – Maple syrup adds just the right amount of sweetness without refined sugars.
Ingredients Needed
- oat milk – my favorite for this recipe because it’s naturally creamy, but any non-dairy milk works! Try almond milk, soy milk, or coconut milk for different flavor options.
- unsweetened cocoa powder – this brings all the rich, chocolatey vibes. You can also use cacao powder for a more intense flavor and added antioxidants.
- chocolate protein powder – adds a protein boost to this cozy drink! I used Truvani chocolate pea protein powder, which is a vegan protein powder, but feel free to use your favorite brand. I haven’t tried this recipe with whey protein powder, but I’d imagine it would work just fine. Just make sure it’s one that blends smoothly and tastes great.
- maple syrup – my favorite natural sweetener. You can adjust the amount to suit your taste or swap it for honey or agave if preferred.
- vanilla extract – a tiny splash adds warmth and enhances the chocolate flavor.
- sea salt – just a pinch balances the sweetness and brings out the chocolate’s richness. Trust me, it makes a difference!
Topping Ideas
The best part of hot chocolate is the toppings right?! Here are some of my go-to toppings:
- Sprinkle of cinnamon
- Coconut whipped cream (or regular whipped cream)
- Mini marshmallows (I love these Dandies mini vanilla marshmallows)
- Chocolate shavings
- Chocolate chips
- Dusting of cocoa powder
- Drizzle of peanut butter
How to Make Protein Hot Chocolate
Step 1: Add all your ingredients to a blender. A blender bottle is another great option.
Step 2: Blend or shake the mixture until combined and smooth.
Step 3: Pour the mixture into a small saucepan. Heat on low heat until just simmering, about 5-7 minutes.
Step 4: Pour into a mug or heat-safe glass, top with your favorite toppings and enjoy!
Brittany’s Tip
Low and slow: Heat your hot chocolate on low to medium heat. Protein powder can get a little finicky if overheated, so patience is key here for the best texture and flavor.
Protein Hot Chocolate Variations
Another great thing about this recipe is how customizable it is! You can make this recipe as is, or switch it up. Here are some ideas:
- Spicy: Feeling bold? Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a dash of chili powder for a hint of heat that pairs beautifully with the chocolate.
- Peppermint: Stir in ¼ teaspoon of peppermint extract, or crumble a candy cane on top for a festive, holiday-ready treat.
- Mocha: Replace ½ cup of the non-dairy milk with brewed coffee or espresso for a protein-packed mocha.
- Nut butter: Swirl in 1-2 teaspoons of peanut butter, almond butter or even tahini. It’s like a Reese’s cup…but make it hot chocolate.
- Caramel: Mix a little of my date caramel sauce to the mixture and drizzle extra on top.
- Spiked: Add a shot of Irish cream, whiskey, bourbon, amaretto or any liquor of choice for a boozy hot chocolate!
Storing Options
- In the fridge: If you have leftovers (unlikely, but just in case), let your hot chocolate cool to room temperature, then transfer it to an airtight container. Store in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat on the stovetop over low heat or in the microwave, stirring well before serving.
- In the freezer: Want to make it ahead? Freeze it in an ice cube tray for future use. Pop a few cubes into a saucepan when you’re ready to enjoy, and heat them up with a splash of milk for a quick, creamy treat.
Frequently Asked Questions
This happens if the cocoa powder or protein powder isn’t fully dissolved. Blending the ingredients first or shaking them in a blender bottle will fix this problem and give you a silky-smooth drink.
Of course! You’ll still have a delicious hot chocolate, but it won’t have the protein boost. If you’re interested in making a protein-free version, try my healthy hot chocolate recipe!
